Join us for the PGASLA Awards Gala featuring guest speakers Shannon Nichol and Mark Focht.

 

Please plan to join your fellow professionals as we gather for an evening of food and celebration on Friday, May 10th!  We are honored to host guest speakers Shannon Nichol, founding principal of Gustafson Guthrie Nichol and Mark Focht, FASLA, 2012-2013 President-Elect of ASLA.  The 2013 PGASLA Design Award honorees and 2013 Kansas State Student University ASLA Honor and Merit Award honorees will also be recognized.  For more information and registration click here.  We hope to see you on the 10th

Shannon Nichol, PLA, ASLA, LEED AP

Gustafson Guthrie Nichol

Shannon Nichol is a founding partner of GGN. Her designs, including Millennium Park’s Lurie Garden, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Campus, and Boston’s North End Parks, are widely recognized for being deeply embedded in their neighborhoods and natural contexts. Shannon's work incorporates complex functions into simple frameworks and refined landforms.

Shannon's current projects include Phase II of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Campus, Rainier Vista at the University of Washington, and plans for Cleveland's historic Group Plan District and Civic Mall - Medical Mart and Convention Center.

Shannon is an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects (Seattle). Her work has received multiple Design Excellence and Honor Awards from ASLA and AIA. Shannon and her partners received the 2011 Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award for Landscape Architecture. Shannon lectures internationally, frequently juries for design awards, and serves on advisory committees for universities and non-profits.

Mark A. Focht, PLA, FASLA
First Deputy Commissioner, Parks & Facilities
Philadelphia Parks & Recreation
President-Elect, American Society of Landscape Architects

As First Deputy Commissioner, Parks & Facilities, Mr. Focht is responsible for operations, maintenance, planning, capital, property management, urban forestry, ecosystem management and security for Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR).  PPR is a 10,100 acre system comprised of 197 passive parks, 55 recreation centers, 97 playgrounds and 71 outdoor swimming pools.

Mr. Focht holds Bachelor of Science and Masters degrees in landscape architecture from Pennsylvania State University and the University of Massachusetts, respectively, and is a PA licensed landscape architect.

Prior appointments include Executive Director of Philadelphia’s Fairmount Park System; Director of the park’s Environment, Stewardship & Education Division and Director of Capital Projects for the Center City District (Philadelphia, PA), a private sector business improvements district.  Additionally, Mr. Focht has over ten years of experience with two multi-disciplinary design firms and was an adjunct professor in Temple University’s Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture from 1989-2010.

Mr. Focht lectures extensively and serves on Boards of the Fairmount Park Conservancy, Fairmount Park Historic Preservation Trust, Please Touch Museum and the Philadelphia Sports Congress.  Mr. Focht was the recipient of the 2007 Arts and Architecture Alumni Achievement Award from Penn State University and was inducted as a Fellow in the American Society of Landscape Architects in October 2008.  Mr. Focht currently serves as the 2012-13 President-Elect of the American Society of Landscape Architects.
